Airport terminals combine the heaviest pedestrian traffic of any commercial building type with continuous rolling loads, 24-hour operation and no practical window for remedial work. Tile selection has to satisfy slip resistance, fire performance, abrasion resistance and cleanability simultaneously, and be documented to the standard expected on a regulated project.

Application Zones and Specification Requirements

Landside entrances and transition zones

Entrance matting zones and the first several metres of internal floor carry water, grit and de-icing salts from outside. Specify a minimum PTV of 36 when tested wet to BS 7976-2 across these areas, and confirm chemical resistance to ISO 10545-13 where de-icing agents are in use. Frost resistance to ISO 10545-12 (F1) applies to any tile continuing beyond the building line to external forecourts and drop-off areas.

Check-in halls, concourses and gate lounges

These are the highest-footfall areas in the building and the primary rolling load path for baggage trolleys and ground support equipment. Abrasion resistance to ISO 10545-7 class 4 or 5 is the working minimum, alongside breaking strength and bending strength verified to ISO 10545-4 for the intended substrate and bedding. Large format porcelain reduces grout line density, which lowers both the cleaning burden and long-term maintenance cost across large floor plates.

Washrooms, shower suites and back-of-house wet areas

Washroom floors, shower rooms and staff wet areas require a minimum PTV of 36, and PTV 36+ throughout for barefoot shower and changing zones. Water absorption to group BIa (ISO 10545-3, no more than 0.5% Wa) is appropriate for floors subject to frequent wet cleaning regimes.

Baggage handling and plant areas

Back-of-house circulation carries mechanical handling equipment and point loads well beyond public areas. Specify to the loading schedule rather than to a general commercial rating, and confirm the tile, adhesive and bedding system as a whole rather than the tile alone.

Fire Performance and Regulatory Requirements

Airport terminals are complex buildings with long escape routes and high occupancy, and reaction to fire is scrutinised accordingly. Ceramic and porcelain tiles are classified A1 or A1fl to BS EN 13501-1 without further testing, which satisfies the most demanding requirements for wall and floor finishes in protected routes and assembly areas. This is a material advantage of tile over resilient and textile alternatives in terminal specification.

Approved Document M and BS 8300-2 require visual contrast between critical surfaces. A minimum 30 point difference in Light Reflectance Value between floor and wall, and between floor and any change of level, is the accepted benchmark. LRV data is available for all ranges and should be recorded as part of the accessibility strategy alongside tactile surface provision at stairs, escalators and travelators.

Programme and Phasing

Terminal works are almost always undertaken in live operational conditions, in short overnight possessions and behind hoarding. Product availability and consistency of batch across a phased programme matter as much as the technical specification. Confirm stock position, lead time and shade batch control at the point of specification, and hold a contingency allowance for later phases.

What slip resistance rating is required for airport floor tiles?

A minimum PTV of 36 when tested wet to BS 7976-2 applies to entrances, transition zones and washrooms. Dry internal concourse areas may be specified at PTV 36 or above as a matter of policy on most terminal projects, given the volume of foot traffic and the risk profile. R-values quoted in European product literature are not the relevant benchmark for UK projects.

Which tile format works best in large terminal spaces?

Large and extra large format porcelain is the usual choice for concourses and check-in halls. Fewer grout lines reduce cleaning time, lower the risk of grout failure under rolling loads, and give a cleaner visual field across large uninterrupted floor plates. Format selection should be confirmed against substrate flatness tolerance and the bedding system before it is fixed in the specification.

Do airport tiles need a specific fire rating?

Ceramic and porcelain tiles are classified A1 (walls) and A1fl (floors) to BS EN 13501-1 without additional testing, which meets the highest reaction to fire requirement applicable to terminal interiors. The classification of the complete system, including adhesive and any decoupling or acoustic layer, should be confirmed where a build-up is specified.

How do airport tiles perform against baggage trolleys and rolling loads?

Specify abrasion resistance to ISO 10545-7 class 4 or 5 and confirm breaking strength to ISO 10545-4. Performance under sustained rolling loads depends on the full build-up, so the adhesive, bed thickness and substrate must be specified together with the tile rather than selected separately.

Can tiles be installed in a live terminal environment?

Yes. Phased installation in overnight possessions is standard practice on terminal refurbishment. Rapid-set adhesives and grouts allow areas to be returned to service quickly. Batch consistency across phases is the main specification risk and should be managed through reserved stock at the outset.
