Concrete effect porcelain reproduces the surface of poured and power-floated concrete, including form marks, pour variation and fine aggregate. It is specified where a scheme wants an industrial or minimal read with predictable performance, and it avoids the curing time, cracking risk and sealing regime of a polished concrete floor.

Specifying concrete effect tiles

• Movement and face count. Concrete effect works by subtle tonal shift rather than pattern. That makes a limited face count more visible, not less, because the eye picks up a repeating cloud. Confirm the number of faces and dry-lay across a representative area.
• Large format is the natural fit. The appeal of concrete is an uninterrupted plane, so joint frequency works against the effect. Large and extra large formats are the usual selection, which places demands on substrate flatness.
• Finish and slip. Matt and structured finishes suit circulation and wet zones with a wet PTV of 36 or above. Lappato and polished concrete effect are dry-area finishes and should not be used at entrances.
• Tone against lighting. Mid and dark greys absorb a lot of light. Where the space has limited daylight, check the floor selection against the lighting design before it is fixed.

A poured and polished concrete floor carries curing time, shrinkage cracking risk, sealing and periodic re-polishing, and it is difficult to repair locally. Porcelain gives the same appearance with defined technical data, no curing programme and replaceable individual units.

Are concrete effect tiles suitable for commercial kitchens?

Only where the finish carries the right data. Commercial kitchens are contaminated wet environments needing a wet PTV of 36 or above, chemical resistance to ISO 10545-13 and thermal shock resistance to ISO 10545-9. Specify a structured finish and confirm the test reports.

Do concrete effect tiles come in external formats?

Many ranges run a matching 20 mm external tile alongside the internal thickness, which allows a continuous appearance from an internal floor onto a terrace. Confirm frost resistance to ISO 10545-12 for the external version.
