Specifying Exterior Wall Tiles

Outdoor wall tile specification requires closer attention to technical performance than interior applications. Frost resistance is the primary criterion: tiles with a water absorption rate above 3% are vulnerable to spalling under freeze-thaw cycling, making low-absorption porcelain the recommended material for exposed exterior wall positions in the UK.

Technical Criteria

Water absorption (EN ISO 10545-3) should not exceed 3% for frost-exposed applications. Group BIa products, dense sintered porcelain with absorption below 0.5%, offer the highest durability in fully exposed positions. For south-facing facades, pool surrounds, and locations subject to prolonged solar exposure, UV stability and glaze colour-fastness are additional specification considerations.

Typical Applications

This range is specified for building facades and retail frontages, hotel and hospitality exteriors, landscaped terrace and courtyard walls, external feature walls, and pool and spa wall surrounds.

Installation Guidance

Exterior wall tile installations require a minimum C2-class flexible adhesive (BS EN 12004) and movement joints at no more than 2.5m centres to accommodate thermal expansion and substrate movement. For substrate-specific installation advice, contact Parkside's technical team.
