Specialist tiles cover ranges that sit outside standard porcelain and ceramic production, whether because of how they are made, the technical requirement they answer or the visual effect they achieve. The category spans handmade and glazed surfaces, dimensional and relief tiles, decorative and patterned ranges, and products engineered for specific performance conditions.

Specifying specialist ranges

  • Establish what makes it specialist. A handmade glazed tile and a technically engineered slip-resistant floor tile are both specialist for different reasons. The first carries variation as an intended characteristic; the second carries test data. The specification approach differs accordingly.
  • Variation as intent, not defect. Handmade, reactive glaze and kiln-variation ranges will differ between tiles and between batches. Agree this with the client against a dry-lay before order, because it is otherwise raised as a defect once fixed.
  • Lead times. Specialist and made-to-order ranges carry longer lead times than stocked products. Confirm availability against the fit-out programme early, and order in one batch where possible.
  • Fixing requirements. Dimensional, oversized and low-absorption specialist products often need a specific adhesive class to BS EN 12004 and a particular fixing method. Check the manufacturer's instruction before the installer prices the work.

Ranges within this category include fluted tiles, patterned tiles and special effect tiles.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a specialist tile?

Any range outside standard porcelain and ceramic production: handmade and reactive glazed tiles, three-dimensional and relief formats, decorative and patterned ranges, and products engineered for a specific technical condition such as high slip resistance or chemical exposure.

Do specialist tiles have longer lead times?

Usually. Made-to-order, handmade and imported ranges commonly carry longer lead times than stocked products. Confirm availability against the programme at selection stage and order the full quantity in one batch where the range allows it.

Are specialist tiles suitable for commercial use?

Many are, but it has to be verified per range rather than assumed. Confirm abrasion class, slip resistance and water absorption against the intended application, particularly for decorative and handmade products originally developed for wall use.
