White terrazzo tiles pair a white or near-white matrix with aggregate that may be tonal, grey, black or coloured. The colourway is specified where the brief calls for maximum light reflectance and a gallery-like surface, most often in retail, workplace reception and design-led hospitality.

Specifying white terrazzo

  • Light reflectance and contrast. A high LRV floor bounces light into the space and reduces the lighting load, but it makes the 30 point contrast against walls that BS 8300-2 recommends harder to achieve. Resolve floor and wall LRV together rather than in sequence.
  • Soiling and cleaning regime. White is the least forgiving terrazzo colourway. Traffic marking, grit and detergent residue all show. Specify an entrance matting run of at least two strides before a white floor begins and confirm the client can resource the cleaning frequency.
  • Grout selection. Grout is the failure point on white floors. A white or near-white grout will discolour in traffic, so specify a stain-resistant or epoxy grout in circulation areas and wet zones rather than a standard cementitious product.
  • Glare. Polished white under direct daylight or downlighting produces glare that reads badly in photographs and is uncomfortable in use. Honed and matt finishes hold the brightness without the specular reflection.

Frequently asked questions

Are white terrazzo tiles practical for commercial floors?

Yes, provided the cleaning regime and the entrance strategy support them. The tile itself is porcelain with the stain resistance that implies. The practical risks are grout discolouration and tracked-in soiling, both of which are addressed at specification stage through grout selection and barrier matting.

What grout should be used with white terrazzo?

A stain-resistant or epoxy grout in any circulation or wet area. Standard cementitious grout in a pale shade will discolour under traffic and become the visible failure on an otherwise sound floor.

Will a white terrazzo floor cause glare?

A polished finish can, particularly under direct daylight or a downlit ceiling. Honed and matt finishes give the same light reflectance without the specular component, and are the safer selection for large open floors.
