Charlie Luxton’s Self Build Home

Tucked away in the Cotswolds countryside is the self-build home of architectural designer and TV presenter Charlie Luxton. Work first started on the one-acre site back in 2017 and the self-build process was captured from conceptual design stages through to completion by Homebuilding & Renovating. We recently caught up with Charlie and his wife Kate to see how their tile choices complimented the rest of their home design.

The first thing that struck us upon entering was the considered approach that has been adopted throughout the space. Nothing is too dominating with great thought being given to creating a balanced design. The public areas of the kitchen and living room are inviting and evoke a sense of calm while the bathroom, en-suite and cloakroom presented an opportunity to inject some character. Colour was an important factor in achieving this, a prime example being the green tiles chosen for the cloakroom. By offsetting the vertical stack bond laying pattern every five rows, this classic small-format tile in a bold and playful green creates a real sense of movement in the space.

Next up was the family bathroom which we’re told is affectionately referred to by the kids as the pizza slice thanks to the triangular shaped shower area. Again, the tiles here are a classic choice with our Carlow Wall collection helping to create a blend of traditional and contemporary design. The pared back colours provide the perfect backdrop for the reclaimed wood shelving.

Our final stop was the master en-suite, which features our Oktra Drops on the floor. A contemporary take on a traditional patterned floor tile, it’s been combined with Oktra Plain on the walls for a strong visual impact.

We love how each space has its own individuality but feels connected to the overall design by the material choices and colour palette. The finished result is a warm and welcoming family home.
