Stone Effect Tiles

Stone effect porcelain reproduces the surface, tone and movement of quarried stone in a vitrified ceramic body. For commercial specification it removes the three problems natural stone brings to a project: variable dimensional tolerance, ongoing sealing, and vulnerability to acids and staining in service.

Specifying stone effect tiles

• Technical performance against natural stone. Porcelain to group BIa absorbs 0.5% or less to ISO 10545-3, resists staining to ISO 10545-14 and needs no sealing. Limestone, travertine and marble all etch under acidic spillage and require a maintained sealant in commercial use.
• Face count and movement. Convincing stone effect depends on the number of printed faces in the range. Ask for the face count and dry-lay a representative area before fixing, particularly on open floors where a repeat becomes obvious.
• Finish and application. Honed and matt finishes suit internal floors. Grip and structured finishes carry the wet PTV of 36 or above needed for entrances and wet zones. Polished is a dry-area finish.
• Format continuity. Many ranges run an internal thickness and a matching 20 mm external format, which lets a floor line continue from inside onto a terrace. Confirm the external version has its own frost and slip data.

Frequently asked questions

Why specify stone effect porcelain instead of natural stone?

Consistency and maintenance. Porcelain is calibrated to a tight dimensional tolerance, does not absorb, does not etch under acidic cleaners and needs no sealing regime. On a commercial project those factors usually outweigh the authenticity of the quarried material, particularly across large floor areas.

Does stone effect tile need sealing?

No. The porcelain body is vitrified. Only cementitious grout may warrant treatment where staining is a risk.

Can stone effect tiles be used externally?

Where the range carries frost resistance to ISO 10545-12. Many stone effect ranges offer a 20 mm external format alongside the internal thickness, suitable for pedestal laying on terraces and podium decks.
