Where a school, college or university operates its own swimming pool or wider leisure facility, whether for curriculum PE, competitive swimming or community use outside term time, the specification moves closer to a commercial leisure club than a typical education space.

Pool surrounds and wet deck areas need PTV ratings of 36 or above, tested to BS 7976-2, with submerged surfaces meeting EN 15288-1 for slip resistance under water. Chemical resistance to pool water treatment, whether chlorine or salt-based, needs a flexible adhesive to EN 12004 class C2 and grout to EN 13888 class CG2, since these areas see constant chemical exposure alongside heavy footfall.

Changing rooms attached to school pools carry their own hygiene and drainage requirements: falls to drain, tanking beneath the tiled finish, and coved skirting at wall to floor junctions to avoid trapping moisture. Where a facility is used by younger children as well as older students, tactile hazard tiles at pool steps and changes in level become an accessibility as well as a safety consideration.
