A tile technical data sheet (TDS) contains everything a specifier needs to confirm a product is fit for its intended use, but the format and terminology vary between manufacturers.
Therefore, it's possible to sign off a specification without checking the figures that actually matter for the application.

Slip Resistance: PTV, Not Just R-rating
UK commercial projects are assessed against the pendulum test value (PTV), tested to BS 7976-2 and referenced in Health and Safety Executive guidance.
A PTV of 36 or above is generally the minimum for wet or barefoot commercial areas such as pool surrounds, though some client briefs and insurance requirements ask for higher.
Some manufacturers, particularly those supplying into European markets, quote an R-rating (the German DIN 51130 ramp test) instead of or alongside PTV. R-ratings and PTV are not directly interchangeable, and R-rating alone is not the recognised benchmark for UK commercial specification.
If a TDS only shows an R-rating, ask the supplier for PTV data tested specifically to BS 7976-2 before relying on it for a UK project.
Water Absorption Classification
Water absorption is classified under ISO 10545-3 and grouped under BS EN 14411. Porcelain tiles fall into group BIa, with water absorption at or below 0.5%, which is the standard requirement for pool surrounds, immersed applications and other high-moisture commercial areas.
Higher absorption groups (BIb, BIIa, BIIb) may be acceptable for lower-risk internal areas but are not suitable for external or heavily wetted applications, where freeze-thaw and staining risk increase with absorption rate.
Check this figure against the specific application, not just the general product category. A tile in the right slip resistance bracket can still fail on water absorption if it's being specified for a submerged or external zone.
Wear Resistance (PEI rating)
The PEI (Porcelain Enamel Institute) rating measures surface abrasion resistance on a scale from 0 to 5, and it determines whether a tile can withstand the footfall of its intended setting.
Domestic-grade tiles are typically rated PEI 3 or below, while commercial specification, particularly for high-traffic areas such as retail floors, hospitality circulation routes or leisure facility corridors, should specify PEI 4 or 5.
A tile that performs well on slip resistance and water absorption can still wear visibly if the PEI rating doesn't match the expected footfall.
Chemical & Stain Resistance
Chemical resistance is tested to ISO 10545-13 and is particularly relevant for pool surrounds, kitchens, laboratories and any area exposed to cleaning agents or process chemicals.
Stain resistance, tested to ISO 10545-14, indicates how well the tile surface resists permanent marking from substances like oil, coffee or ink. Both figures should be checked against the specific chemical environment of the project rather than assumed from the tile's general commercial suitability.
Breaking Strength & Modulus of Rupture
Breaking strength and modulus of rupture, tested to ISO 10545-4, measure how much force a tile can withstand before fracturing.
This matters most for floor applications under heavy point loads, such as areas with wheeled trolleys, gym equipment or furniture legs, where a tile with insufficient breaking strength can crack under sustained or repeated load even if it performs well on wear resistance.
Thinner or large-format tiles are typically more sensitive to this figure, so it's worth checking against the specific loading conditions of the installation rather than assuming a commercial-grade tile automatically clears the bar.
Thermal Shock & Frost Resistance
Thermal shock resistance (BS EN ISO 10545-9) matters for areas subject to rapid temperature change, such as commercial kitchens, washdown areas or spaces near saunas and steam rooms.
Frost resistance, tested to ISO 10545-12, is a separate figure relevant to any external application in the UK climate, confirming the tile won't crack or spall after repeated freeze-thaw cycling.
Neither figure is automatically implied by a tile being rated for outdoor use elsewhere in the data sheet, so check both are stated explicitly for external or thermally variable projects.
Dimensional Tolerance
Dimensional tolerance, covered under ISO 10545-2, sets the permitted variation in a tile's length, width, thickness and flatness (rectification).
Large format tiles and tight-grout-line installations are particularly sensitive to this figure, since even small tolerances compound visibly across a large floor area.
Confirming rectified sizing and tolerance class before sign-off avoids installation issues that only become apparent once the tiling has started.
Before You Sign Off
A TDS covers multiple, sometimes unrelated properties, and a tile can meet the requirement on one figure while falling short on another.
The practical approach is to check each figure against the specific conditions of the area it's being specified for, rather than treating a single "commercial grade" or "PTV 36+" label as confirmation the tile is right for every part of the project.
Where a data sheet is unclear or missing a figure relevant to the application, request confirmation from the supplier's technical team before approving the specification.
